Three Owls Earn MASCAC Weekly Honors
Sarah Hough from softball, Eliza Lee from women’s track and field, and Emily Heslin from women’s lacrosse all earned conference weekly honors this past week.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State athletics had three athletes earn MASCAC weekly honors this past week featuring softball senior Sarah Hough (Southwick, Mass.), women's track and field senior Eliza Lee (Walpole, Mass.), and women's lacrosse first-year Emily Heslin (Wrentham, Mass.).
Hough was named the MASCAC player of the week after helping the Owls lock up the MASCAC regular season title for a third straight season. She finished with three hits including a home run, double, three runs batted in, and a .778 slugging percentage across a sweep of Salem State on Saturday. Collected two hits, a double, and a RBI in the opener which clinched the number one seed in the MASCAC postseason in a 7-4 win. Then, she added a two-run home run to start the scoring in the regular season finale.
Entering postseason play, Hough is the conference leader with nine home runs and 48 runs batted in while slashing .402/.451/.769 in 33 games played. The home run on Saturday was Hough's 15 career long ball which is tied for the third most in program history. Softball begins their conference postseason at home as the top seed tomorrow against MCLA with first pitch at 3:30 P.M.
Lee delivered a sensational weekend at the New England Division III Championships as she was named the MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week after securing a pair of All-New England honors by placing sixth in both the long jump (5.58m) and the triple jump (11.26m). She accounted for six points for the Owls at the meet.
The All-New England results come on the heels of the MASCAC Championships where Lee dominated the competition, gathering all-conference accolades after registering three individual event victories in the long jump, triple jump, and 400m hurdles while also competing on a pair of relay-winning teams. She remains in the top 50 on the national outdoor qualifying lists in both the long jump and triple jump.
Heslin put forth a strong effort in her first collegiate postseason games, earning the MASCAC Rookie of the Week after scoring three goals and an assist, picking up six ground balls and forcing three turnovers through the Owls tournament run. She scored twice in the 9-8 conference semifinal victory against Bridgewater State, then added a goal and an assist with three ground balls in the overtime setback to Worcester in the title game.
Heslin registered 22 points in her first season as an Owl with nine goals and 13 assists.
