Alfonso Blasts Owls In To Championship Game
Westfield topped Worcester, 9-1; Those Two Meet Again in Sunday's Title Tilt
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior leftfielder Mia Alfonso roped two home runs to lead the way as Westfield State topped Worcester State 9-1 in the semifinals of the 2026 MASCAC Softball tournament at Sullivan Field on Friday.
With the win, #1 seed Westfield advances to Sunday's 12 noon championship game. (Please note the championship round has been moved to Sunday from the originally scheduled Saturday due to the forecast).
In the other two games here today, #MCLA topped #5 Bridgewater State 6-2 in an elimination game, then MCLA was eliminated by #2 seed Worcester, 13-1 in the final game of the day.
With the win, Worcester (25-15) will face Westfield in Sunday's championship. Worcester would need to win two games to claim the title, while Westfield enters unbeaten in the tournament and needs just one win against the Lancers to earn the tournament crown.
Westfield improved to 37-1 on the season with the win, as the Owls are ranked 10th in the nation in the NCAA D3 RPI rankings, and 21st in the NFCA Coaches Poll.
Westfield led 1-0 into the bottom of the third, when Alfonso yanked a 2-run home run to left field to stake the Owls to a 3-0 lead. She added a solo home run on a tracer deep over the left center field wall in the fifth inning.
Westfield also got a solo home run from Alyssa Slack in the fourth, s the Owls ended the game early via the eight rn rule after Westfield scored three in the bottom of the fifth. With Lyla Dwyer driving in the winning run with a liner to left that was misplayed and Slack scored from third with the decisive run.
Joss Mettey (W, 12-1) grabbed the pitching win for the Owls with a complete game four hitter, the lone blemish on the scoreboard a solo home run to left by Worcester SS Emma LaPoint, a Westfield native.
