Hamel Wins Mile, Sets Provisional Mark in 1000 at Coast Guard Winter Invite
Shea Hamel finished first in the mile and third in the 1000 to front the Owls performance at Coast Guard.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior Shea Hamel (Longmeadow, Mass.) finished first in the mile run and added a New England Division III provisional mark in the 1000 as the Owls competed at the Coast Guard Winter Invite #1 from New London, Conn. on Saturday.
Hamel edged out Ryann Langdale of Coast Guard for the top spot, finishing about a second ahead with a time of 5:36.15. She also earned a top three finish in the 1000, crossing the tape in 3:14.58 which is a New England Division III provisional mark.
Westfield had four of the top six runners in the mile with Tealei Chandonnet (Dracut, Mass.) earning fourth in a time of 5:50.34.
First-year athlete Emma Daly (Pittsfield, Mass.) delivered several strong performances on the day, including a New England Division III provisional mark in the 55m dash, converted to 60m time, finishing third in the event with a time of 7.71 seconds. She was also seventh out of 24 athletes in the 200, then added a fourth-place leap in the high jump at a height of 1.43m.
Eliza Lee (Walpole, Mass.) turned in a second-place performance in the triple jump, stretching for a jump of 10.58m on her final attempt to vault into the second-place spot. She was also fourth in the long jump at a mark of 5.16m.
In the 800, Reese Stevens (Agawam, Mass.) was second in the event, recording a time of 2:27.63. Julie Richardson (Stoughton, Mass.) was third in a deep 600m field, posting a final time of 1:54.02.
The Owls also got two fifth place finishes from sophomore Jailene Felix (Springfield, Mass.) in the 400 (1:07.08) and first-year Bella Coughlin in the triple jump (9.85m).
In total, the Owls earned seven personal records to begin the 2026 portion of the indoor schedule.
Westfield State returns to action on Saturday, January 24 as the Owls will compete in the Massasoit Classic from Springfield College.
