The Owls were held to just three hits on the day.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Montclair State starting pitcher Chris Matesic delivered a complete-game shutout as the 29th-ranked Red Hawks blanked Westfield State 13-0 in game two of a three-game series from Montclair, N.J. on Saturday afternoon.
Danny O'Brien and John Tomsho each had three hits and three RBI for Montclair which improved to 13-4 on the season and reached double digit runs for the 11th time this season. Alex Martin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Kaen Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y.) both led off the game with singles, but the Owls (3-9) were unable to capitalize and were then held to just one hit for the remainder of the game which was called after seven innings due to run rule.
Matesic improved to 4-0 on the season for the Red Hawks, allowing no runs on three hits with one walk. The Owls managed to put the ball in play throughout, only striking out twice but had little traffic on the basepaths.
Sean McNamara (Lowell, Mass.) got the start for the Owls and took the loss. Left hander Dan Provost (Westfield, Mass.) tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen without allowing a hit.
After stranding two Owls runners in the first inning, the Red Hawks sent ten batters to the dish and piled up seven runs in the bottom of the inning to put Westfield in an early deficit.
Steven Carrozza (Pearl River, N.Y.) had the third hit for Westfield, entering the game as a pinch hitter in the seventh where he laced a double down the left field line where Montclair recorded the second out of the inning by throwing a runner out at the plate.
The Owls and Red Hawks will meet one more time in the rubber match of the series as the Owls took game one by a final score of 8-3. First pitch on Sunday will be at 3:00 P.M. from Yogi Berra Stadium.
