WESTFIELD, Mass. – Three Westfield State University seniors were named as the athletic department's Senior Scholar Athletes of the Year at the annual awards ceremony on Wednesday night at the Woodward Center.
Field hockey's Lindsey Spindel (Mendon, Mass./Nipmuc), and women's lacrosse's Cassidy Harvey (Niskayuna, N.Y.) shared the women's award, with baseball pitcher Chris Schoen (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) earning the men's award.
The award is given to the senior male and female athletes with the highest overall cumulative grade-point averages.
Spindel closed out her career with the Owls field hockey team in the fall, playing in all 19 games in the midfield and scoring three goals and an assist. A double major in movement and exercise science, Spindel transferred into Westfield after playing Division I field hockey at Long Island University. Owls field hockey finished 10-9 this season and qualified for the Little East Conference tournament.
Harvey will help lead the Owls women's lacrosse team into the MASCAC Championship game on Saturday. A psychology major, she ranks second on the team in goals (47) and points (60). Owls women's lacrosse is 13-5 this season.
Schoen has battled injuries on the mound that limited him from pitching this season while swinging the bat in B-squad action, but has excelled in the classroom as a criminal justice major. Westfield is 16-18 overall and 10-8 in MASCAC play this season, with a 3-game set against Bridgewater State still to play this weekend.
The awards were pesented by Dr. Paul Cacolice, a professor in the Westfield State sports medicine and human performance department, who serves as the Owls' NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative.
