May 16, 2018
WESTFIELD, Mass. - Senior baseball left fielder John Lippincott (Barkhamsted, Conn. / Northwestern Regional) and senior golf captain Mike Sarkis (East Longmeadow, Mass.) were honored as the Westfield State University male athletes of the year as Westfield State recently honored its senior athletes and special award winners at the Student Athlete Advisory Committee banquet.
John Lippincott
As a junior transfer from Division I Central Connecticut State University, Lippincott finished the regular season with a .380 batting average in the MASCAC and carries a .316 batting average overall.
Lippincott has hit four home runs, two triples and 11 doubles, and scored 38 runs while driving in 34, alternating between the leadoff spot and the 3-4-5 spots in the batting order this season. He also plays a stellar defensive left field with just one error, three assists, and a plethora of diving catches for the Owls.
In just two years at Westfield State, Lippincott graduates with a .324 batting average with seven homeruns, four triples and 21 doubles, and scored 64 runs with 64 RBI.
The male athlete of the year has also been named to the all-conference team for a second straight season, and helped lead the Owls to a 24-16-1 overall record and the 2018 MASCAC title for the first time since 2009, and the 10th NCAA tournament appearance in school history.
Westfield State will play in the Auburn, New York regionals in the 2018 NCAA tournament on May 17 and 18. As the eighth seed in the region, the Owls will face host and top seed Cortland (N.Y.) State in the first game.
Mike Sarkis
Sarkis, the 2017 MASCAC champion, helped lead the men's golf team to a second place finish at the 2017-18 MASCAC Championship. He placed sixth individually, shooting a 78 in the fall tournament.
Just months prior, Sarkis won the 2016-17 individual title, carding a 3-over 75 in the victory. The Owls finished third as a team.
In addition to the MASCAC Championship tournament's move to the fall, the championship event will also begin to rotate to host sites around the league and state. Westfield State is slated to host the event in 2019.
