Bingham Ties Big Fly Record As Owls Split With Wesleyan

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior 1B Sarah Bingham (Reno, Nevada / Wooster HS) launched a 3-run homerun, the 16th of her career to tie the Owls school record, as Westfield engineered an 11-8 win over Wesleyan in game two of a non-conference doubleheader in Middletown, Conn. on Thursday afternoon.
The Cardinal took a 3-2 win over the Owls in game one for a doubleheader split. Westfield improves to 23-7 on the season, while Wesleyan is now 17-9.
In the nightcap, Bingham carried the Owls with a 2-run double in the first inning to stake the Owls to a 2-0 lead, with Kassidy LaTour adding a 2-run double in the third to extend the lead to 4-0.
Wesleyan added three runs in their bottom half the third inning, getting two on a Molly Lennon home run.
Westfield tacked on six runs in the fourth, the big blow coming on Bingham's 3-run shot to left field.

Sarah Hough added three hits for the Owls and Abby Clark drove in a pair of runs. Eleven different Owls scored a run in the win.
Angelina Vartuli (W, 3-3) picked up the win in relief of starter Gianna Conte, as the Owls rotated pitchers throughout the day with conference games ahead this weekend.
In the opener, Westfield fell behind 1-0 in the first on a solo home run from the Cardinal's Bella Secaira-Cotto, who also earned the pitching with with a complete game, scattering seven hits and not allowing an earned run.
Wesleyan added a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to grab a 3-0 lead.
Westfield finally answered in the seventh with a two-out rally led by a walk from Rachel Brewer-Karimi. Allyssa Slack followed with a single, then pinch hitter Caroline O'Donnell reached on an error to score Brewer-Karimi. Clark followed with a double to left to score Slack, before Wesleyan was able to retire the side and preserve the win.
Katherine Canty (L, 9-2) was charged with the loss, working four innings and striking out five, allowing just the one run on the first inning home run. Slack finished with a pair of hits in the opener and finished with four hits in the twinbill.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Framingham State on Saturday in a battle of the top two teams in the MASCAC standings. The first game begins at 12 noon, with the Owls' senior day ceremony set to take place between games.
