WESTFIELD, Mass. --- Westfield State senior Sarah Bingham set the program's career home run record with a solo shot in game 1, but the Owls' softball team dropped a doubleheader at Bridgewater State on Saturday to close the regular season.
Westfield closes the regular season 31-9 overall and 11-3 in the MASCAC. The Owls were swept for just the second time all season. Despite the two losses, the Owls will be the top seed and host for this weekend's MASCAC softball tournament, having clinched the regular season title earlier this week.
Bridgewater improves to 19-17 and 8-6 in the MASCAC. The Bears will be the #4 seed and host Salem State in a first-round game on Tuesday.
Westfield fell 4-2 in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Bears handed Owls' starter Katherine Canty (L, 12-3) just her third loss of the season, as she spun five innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs while striking out five. Bingham was the lone repeat hitter of the day, blasting a home run to left in the second inning that cut the Bears lead to 2-1.
For Bingham, it was the 4th home run of the season and the 17th home run of her career, passing Maddy Atkocaitis '18 for the most in Owls softball history.
Westfield trailed 4-1 after five innings. Hannah Wodecki doubled home a run in the sixth, but that was as close as the Owls would get.
In game two, Westfield grabbed a 1-0 lead when Christina Ciampa singled and later came around to score on Kassidy LaTour's infield single in the top of the first, but that was all the offense the Owls could muster. Ciampa finished with a pair of hits, including a double, and Allyssa Slack added a pair of hits as well. Starter Joss Mettey(L, 8-2) was charged with the pitching loss, working the first two innings as the Owls also used Gianna Conte and Angelina Vartuli to set up the staff for this week's conference tournament.
McKayla Cusack went the distance to earn the pitching win for the Bears. Makayla Ansell hit a solo home run in the third inning.
Westfield will host the double-elimination final four of the MASCAC softball tournament, starting with a single game on Thursday, May 8. There will be three games on Friday, May 9, and the championship game and if-necessary game are slated for Saturday, May 10, all at Westfield State's Sullivan Field.
