WESTFIELD, Mass. – Liam Wells scored a pair of goal to lead Anna Maria College to a 4-1 men's ice hockey win over Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference game at the Amelia Park Arena on Saturday evening.
Anna Maria improves to 12-5 on the season and 8-2 in the MASCAC, while Westfield is now 9-8 and 5-5 in the conference.
Wells opened the scoring with a counter attack goal, skating the puck to the right face off circle and ripping a shot short side just 21 seconds into the second period.
Westfield answered with a breakaway of their own, when Emile Pichette picked up an errant puck in the defensive zone and fed it ahead to Cooper Board, who scored on a blast from the right side to tie the game at 1-1 at the 11:40 mark of the second.
The Amcats responded just 18 seconds later, cycling the puck in the offensive zone before Guillame Coloumbe tipped home a shot from Samson Mouland for a 2-1 lead.
Pearce Baker gave the Amcats a 3-1 lead on a 5-on-3 power play 43 seconds into the third period.
Westfield got a 5-3 chance late in regulation, and pulled goalie Aidan Winslow to make it a 6-3 power play, but the Owls managed just one quality shot before Braeden McKinnon spring the puck free and it found Wells on the move as he came out of the penalty box and skated the puck in for the goal and the 4-1 final.
The Amcats outshot the Owls 49-25 on the night. Winslow stopped 45 shots for the Owls, with Anna Maria' s Matthew Hennessey making 24 saves to earn the win.
