Three Owls Named as NFHCA Scholars of Distinction
Owls sophomores Maddy Barry (Norwood, Mass.) and Kaleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.), and first-year Lee Gould (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin) were recognized for the award, which honors undergraduate student-athletes who have exhibited exceptional academic excellence, achieving a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher throughout the fall semester of the 2023-24 academic year.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University field hockey had three players named as "Scholars of Distinction" by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Owls sophomores Maddy Barry (Norwood, Mass.) and Kaleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.), and first-year Lee Gould (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin) were recognized for the award, which honors undergraduate student-athletes who have exhibited exceptional academic excellence, achieving a cumulative grade-point average of 3.9 or higher throughout the fall semester of the 2023-24 academic year.
A total of 509 undergraduate student-athletes at the NCAA Division III level earned recognition as NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction.
Murphy shared the team lead in goals this season with seven, and ranked second on the team with 16 points.
Gould, a defender, played in all 20 games with 14 starts, and one goal, and Barry, a midfielder, played in 12 games while coming off the bench for the Owls.
Westfield finished with a 12-8 overall record, tying the school record for wins in a season, and posted an 8-2 mark in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference play under first-year head coach Carden Brown.
