Owls Field Hockey Sweeps MASCAC Weekly Awards
Owls’ sophomore forward Kaleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) was named the offensive player of the week, sophomore goalkeeper Emma Gniadek (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) was named the defensive player of the week, and first-year forward Ashley D’Elia (Watertown, Conn.) was tabbed as the rookie of the week.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State field hockey swept the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference's weekly awards, the league announced on Monday.
Owls' sophomore forward Kaleigh Murphy (Pembroke, Mass.) was named the offensive player of the week, sophomore goalkeeper Emma Gniadek (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) was named the defensive player of the week, and first-year forward Ashley D'Elia (Watertown, Conn.) was tabbed as the rookie of the week.
Murphy scored three goals in two games, as the Owls went 1-1 in the Caryl Newhof Classic Tournament at Smith. Murphy netted a pair of goals as Westfield rolled past Nichols, 7-1 in the season opener.
Gniadek finished the week with a 2.00 goals against average and an .800 save percentage while starting both games for the Owls. She allowed just one goal vs. Nichols, and then made 13 saves in the Owls 3-2 loss to Smith.
D'Elia netted her first collegiate goal in her first game, tallying Westfield's third goal of the day en route to a 7-1 win over Nichols in the season opener.
Westfield State is 1-1 under first year head coach Carden Brown. The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday evening with a non-conference game at Mount Holyoke College.
