Hernandez Claims MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week
The first-year middle blocker racked up ten blocks this past week.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State first-year Shaneidy Hernandez (Springfield, Mass.) secured conference honors this week as she was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts this past week for the Owls.
Hernandez piled up ten blocks in a pair of matches, including six blocks and six digs with two kills in the Owls four-set conference win over MCLA on Wednesday night. The win clinched a first round bye for Westfield in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament. She also added four blocks and two kills in a setback against non-conference opponent Wellesley.
On the season, Hernandez has been a force on the front line for the Owls as her 47 total blocks are tied for third in the MASCAC. Her 0.73 blocks per set are tied for second in the conference ranks. Hernandez's 18 solo blocks leads the Owls and she's also tallied 58 kills across 18 matches.
Westfield State will visit Worcester State for the regular season finale on Saturday at 12:00 P.M. before preparing for the MASCAC Tournament where the Owls have guaranteed at least a top two seed and a first round bye. Westfield will host a semifinal match on Thursday, November 13 from the Woodward Center.
