WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior attacker Natalie DeMaio (Westwood, Mass.) scored her 200th career goal in Westfield State's 16-6 regular season finale win over Framingham State in a MASCAC game on the road Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Owls finish the regular season with a 5-1 conference record and earn a first-round bye in the MASCAC postseason tournament. The Rams drop to 4-2 in the conference. Westfield will be the second seed in the playoffs despite holding a share of first-place with Worcester as the Lancers held off the Owls 11-9 earlier in the regular season to own the tiebreaker.
DeMaio got the milestone out of the way early as she scored a free position goal 31 seconds into the game, joining Laura Chiricosta '11 as the only two players in program history to reach the 200-goal mark. DeMaio scored five goals today including scoring three of her five in the closing quarter with a free-position shot on assists from Kylie Buchanan (Westfield, Mass.) and Emma Prattson (Tolland, Conn.). DeMaio sits at 204 career goals which is five goals shy of tying Chiricosta's program record.
Mercedes Rozzi (South Burlington, Vt.) found the back of the net to make it 2-1 and the Owls didn't give up the lead from there. Between the end of the first quarter till mid-way through the third, the Owls scored five unanswered goals and held the Rams to just two goals.
Rozzi netted three herself as three Westfield scorers combined for 11 goals. Prattson was the points leader for the squad as she totaled seven points in the form of three goals and four assists. Buchanan found the back of the net twice and dished out an assist.
Kara Banagan (Niskayuna, N.Y.) made nine saves in the winning effort, securing her seventh win of the campaign.
Westfield State will host a MASCAC tournament semifinal game on Thursday, May 1 at 7:00 P.M. from Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass. with the opponent still to be determined based on first round outcomes.
