WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State senior midfielder Emma Cretella (Cheshire, Conn.) was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week after a three-game slate for the Owls this past week.
Despite a challenging non-conference schedule last week which featured the number 19-ranked team in the nation in Amherst, Cretella was not affected by the steep competition as she piled up 10 goals and an assist along with nine draw controls and three ground balls.
Cretella began the week with three goals and four draw controls in a narrow 11-10 loss to RPI on Monday. She then collected three more goals and racked up five draw controls in a loss to Connecticut College on Wednesday. Finally, in a matchup against #19 Amherst, the senior midfielder elevated her game by burying four of the Owls eight goals as Westfield was edged 11-8.
Through seven games played this season, Cretella leads the Owls in goals scored and is tied for the third-most scores in the MASCAC with 24. She also leads Westfield with 29 points as she has tacked on five assists this season. Her 25 draw controls are second on the team as well.
Westfield State will travel to Springfield College for their next game on Wednesday with a start time of 6:00 P.M. before returning home to host the conference opener against Mass. Maritime on Saturday at noon.
