Westfield, Mass.- Westfield State's women's lacrosse team has been ranked in the top spot for the 2022 season in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason coaches' polls. They totaled 49 points in the voting with seven first place bids.
The Owls have three returning seniors in midfielder Kelly Gearin (Luneburg, Mass.), attacker Victoria Paras (Attack, Medford, Mass.), and defender Colleen Fellows (Auburn, Mass.).
Last year, Westfield finished 8-2 overall with a 3-1 MASCAC record, and won the conference tournament win a 14-13 win over Framingham State in the title game.
Their leading scorer last year was the now graduated senior Sam Donohoe (Pepperell, Mass.) who ended the season with 29 goals. Next on the list was first year and MASCAC Tournament MVP, Natalie DeMaio (Westwood, Mass.). She found twine 21 times in 10 games, recording a fine rookie campaign. She will be returning for her sophomore campaign in 2022, attempting to fill the shoes of Donohoe and take the reigns as the top offensive threat for WSU.
Returning first team all MASCAC attacker Cassidy Harvey (Niskayuna, N.Y.) recorded 32 points last season (17 goals, 15 assists). Harvey had a pair of hat-trick performances as a sophomore against MASCAC opponents. This productivity should only go up from Harvey as she enters her third season with the Owls.
Goalkeeper Kara Banagan (Niskayuna, N.Y.) played in eight games and started in five of them last season as a first year for the Owls. She finished the year with a 5-1 record and 8.87 goals allowed average, both of which are the second-best single season totals in school history. Banagan also earned first team all-conference and International Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Berkshire Region honors for her efforts throughout the season.
Their season opener is slated for March 1st against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York at 6:00 P.M.
