Women's Basketball (8-4, 0-1 MASCAC) vs Worcester State (4-7, 1-0 MASCAC) – 12:00 P.M.
The Owls enter Saturday after falling to Framingham State in the MASCAC opener, 91-66, on Wednesday night. Westfield owns an 8-4 overall record and are searching for offensive stability in league play after losing their top scorer Grace Wigington (14.2ppg) due to injury.
Sophomore guard Caroline Galvani (Framingham, Mass.) has supplied additional offense for Westfield without Wigington, averaging 14.3 points per game over her last four games. Morgan Berthiaume (Webster, Mass.) is tied with Galvani at 10.4 points per game for the season as well.
Tavi Williams (Springfield, Mass.) and Sophia Rockwood (Windsor, Vt.) each scored nine points against Framingham with Williams leading the Owls in rebounds per game (9.0) and steals (41).
Defensively, the Owls once again find themselves as one of the nation's leaders in turnovers forced as their 35 turnovers forced per game ranks second in all of Division III, only trailing the number one ranked team in Division III in NYU. Westfield leads the conference in scoring as well at 72.3.
The Lancers are fresh off an 86-19 thumping of MCLA this past Wednesday and come into action Saturday with a 1-4 road mark. The Owls have won six straight meetings against Worcester with their most recent matchup coming in the 2025 MASCAC Tournament where the Owls prevailed 89-75 after outscoring the Lancers by 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Leading the scoring charge for Worcester is junior guard Lena Waldron who is fourth in the MASCAC at 14.0 points per game. In the playoff game last year, Waldron posted a double-double against the Owls, collecting 15 points and ten rebounds.
Waldron and senior Hannah Lomonaco both have the ability to stretch the floor with Waldron checking in at 41.7 percent from beyond the arc while Lomonaco qualifies as the conference's leader in three-point percentage at 41.2 percent.
Men's Basketball (9-3, 1-0 MASCAC) vs Worcester State (3-9, 1-0 MASCAC) – 2:00 P.M.
The Owls and Lancers meet for the first time this season in a matchup featuring the last five conference champions with Westfield winning three while the Lancers earned back-to-back titles in 2023 and 2024. Westfield enters as the defending MASCAC champion with these two teams providing quite the recent track record of important, closely contested games.
Westfield and Worcester split during the regular season last year with both teams winning on their home floors. The Lancers have had recent success against the Owls, winning six of the last seven games after Westfield ripped off five straight wins during their consecutive title runs in 2019 and 2021.
The Owls recently defeated Framingham 67-62 in the MASCAC season opener on Wednesday led by a 22-point outing by sophomore guard A.Z. Allah (Springfield, Mass.). Allah is one of four double figure scorers for a balanced Westfield scoring attack. Sophomore forward Kenney Rogers (Springfield, Mass.) leads the Owls at 16.1 points per game which is tied for second in the MASCAC. He also leads the conference in total assists with 52 and is fourth in rebounds per game (8.7).
Ball security has been a priority for the Owls as they enter Saturday with just 10.6 turnovers per game, the fewest in the conference. On the defensive side of the ball, the Owls are forcing the second-most turnovers in the league at 15.7.
Owls head coach Rich Sutter will be on milestone watch during the game as his win against the Rams on Wednesday was his 399th career victory.
The Lancers are also coming off a victory on Wednesday, defeating MCLA 89-79 at home. Worcester had five players in double figures led by 16 points and ten rebounds from Johnny Annan. Annan is second on the team in scoring behind Joe Okla who checks in at 13.1 points per game. Worcester is in search of their first true road win of the season, posting an 0-5 record thus far.
