Gray, Pond Sweep MASCAC Honors
Owls senior Melissa Gray and first-year guard Maddie Pond both earned MASCAC recognition this past week.
Westfield, Mass. – Westfield State senior guard Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.) and first-year guard Maddie Pond (Holyoke, Mass.) each received MASCAC recognition this past week as Gray earned the MASCAC Player of the Week, while Pond collected the MASCAC Rookie of the Week.
Gray became the Owls all-time leading scorer on Saturday as she recorded a 14-point first quarter, which was followed by a deep three-pointer on the opening possession of the second quarter to claim the top spot on the all-time scoring list. Gray finished the game with 24 points, burying six of nine triples in a 107-95 victory over SUNY Polytechnic Institute. She also added seven points and six rebounds in sixteen minutes of action in a win over MCLA on Sunday, 101-54. Over the weekend, Gray averaged 15.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. On the season, Gray leads the MASCAC in both scoring (20.5 points per game) and steals (3.8 per game), while also ranking second in the conference in three-point percentage (37.7%). She is also closing in on the school's three-point record, as she needs six more threes to surpass Westfield State women's head coach Andrea Bertini's record of 287 triples.
Pond claimed the rookie of the week after averaging 10.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in the 2-0 week for the Owls. She posted a career-high 14 points on a perfect 6-6 from the floor (2-2 from deep) in the win over MCLA on Sunday. She also added three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
