KEENE, N.H. - Freshman guard Jen Ashton (Beverly) had 24 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and five steals and junior guard Courtney Kegresse (Adams/Hoosac Valley) poured in 22 points to power the hot-shooting Westfield State University women's basketball team to a 73-48 victory over Salve Regina University in the opening round of the Keene State Tournament on Friday evening, Nov. 18.
Westfield, 1-1, will play the host team Keene State in the championship game, slated for 3:00p.m. on Saturday. Keene handled Mount Ida, 73-59, in the other first-round matchup. There will be Live State and Live Video Stream for the Westfield-Keene game.
Sparked by the long range shooting of Kegresse (6 for 8 from 3-point range), Ashton (3 for 4) and freshman guard Molly Waitt (3 for 5), Westfield State set a school record for most 3-point baskets made in a game. The Owls were a sizzling 13 for 25 from 3-point land.
Kegresse also canned a pair of two-point buckets to finish 8 for 10 from the field; she grabbed six rebounds.
Also scoring in double figures was freshman guard Waitt (Melrose/Austin Prep) with 13 points. Senior point guard Janae Jones (Springfield/Minnechaug HS) only tallied two points but she had eight rebounds and 11 assists, two shy of the school record.
