Westfield State first-year pitcher Katherine Canty named the MASCAC Rookie of the Week after 4-0 weekend
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State first-year pitcher Katherine Canty (Natick, Mass.) was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week after a dominant performance in a 4-0 weekend for the Owls.
Canty got the starting nod in game one of a doubleheader set against Mass. Maritime where she fired a complete-game, two-hit shutout in a 13-0 victory. The Owls reached the run-rule after an eight-run sixth inning as Canty delivered one of the top performances of any Owls pitcher on the season. She covered all six innings and fanned a career-high 11 batters to secure the victory. Her 11 strikeouts were the most recorded in a single game by an Owls pitcher this season.
Canty also assisted in helping her own cause at the dish, recording a hit in two at bats with a run scored.
The first-year starter has put together a solid season within the Owls pitching staff, posting the lowest earned run average on the team at 2.90 across 31.1 innings, which is the third most innings pitched on the team.
Westfield State, who swept back-to-back weekend series against Mass. Maritime and Baruch College, will play host to Keene State in a rescheduled doubleheader on Wednesday with first pitch of game one slated for 3:00 P.M.
