Softball Tops Juniata, 9-1

Westfield State softball picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday evening as the Owls topped Juniata (Pa.) College, 9-1 in six innings.

Westfield State starting pitcher Emily Arredondo shut the Eagles down, allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out four.

Freshman outfielder Sam Hallice led the way at the plate, rapping out three hits, including a double triple, and driving in four runs. Her double in the bottom of the third plated two runs to stake the Owls to a 5-0 lead, and her single in the bottom of the sixth drove in Jordyn Carpenter to extend the lead to 9-1, and ended the game via the eight-run rule.

Carpenter added three hits and two RBI of her own, and Alexandra Czarkosky finished with a pair of hits.

In the opener on Wednesday, Westfield lost a tight game to Husson (Me.) Univeristy, 2-1.   

Husson grabbed an unearned run in the top of the first, but Westfield tied the game in the bottom half as Naraylee Baez led off with a walk and a steal, and eventally scored on Rachel Sinclair's base hit.

The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, as Meagan Gosselin laid down a squeeze bunt that plated Libby Hewes with what proved to be the game winning run.

Westfield was held to just two hits on the afternoon, as Alyssa Clark delivered a 2-out pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh.  Mikayla Tripp picked up the win.

The Owls Brenna Welch pitched admirably in the defeat, scattering eight hits with just one walk while allowing just one earned run.

The Owls take tomorrow off from competition before wrapping up their spring trip on Friday.  The Owls are scheduled to play Potsdam State at 9:30 a.m. at Sleepy Hollow in Leesburg.  The scheduled second game against Bowdoin has been postponed.  A replacement game may be announced.
