CAMBRIDGE - Senior Dave Bergeron (Northbridge) finished first in the javelin at the All New England championships on May 13 at MIT.
Competing against athletes from New England Divisions I, II, and III colleges, Bergeron's winning toss was 196-4. Peter Maitland of Boston University placed second (195-3), followed by Robert Sales of the University of Rhode Island (191-3), and Clayton Curtis of the University of Vermont (188-4).
Westfield's two other standout javelin throwers - Drew Soltysiak (Westfield) and Shawn McCorquodale (Athol) - placed 10th (172-2) and 11th (170-6), respectively, with subpar throws in the inclement weather conditions.
Also earning All New England honors was senior high jumper Dave Richardson (Beverly), who placed fifth by clearing 6-4.
Freshman Brandon Palmer (Mohawk Trail Regional) placed 10th in both the high jump and triple jump despite solid efforts of 22-3/4 and 45-2 ¼, respectively.
Also competing for the Owls were: senior Eric Kelly (400 hurdles, 14th, 56.45), McCorquodale (long jump, 11th, 21-6 ¾), and Chris Flynn (triple jump, 13th, 43-1/2).
