Men’s Ice Hockey Semifinal Preview Vs. Fitchburg
The third-seeded Owls travel to the second-seeded Falcons on Saturday for a 4:00 P.M. puck drop.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Third-seeded Westfield State men's ice hockey will travel to second-seeded Fitchburg State University for a MASCAC semifinal game on Saturday at 4:00 P.M. from the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, Mass.
THE MATCHUP
The Owls and Falcons meet for the third time this season with the road team ending up victorious in both games. Fitchburg controlled the play in the first matchup at Amelia Park Arena, winning 4-1 while tallying two power play goals and getting 35 saves from netminder Frederick Soderberg. In the regular season finale at Fitchburg, the Owls secured a 2-0 win which included a two-point night from Brett Williams and a first period goal by Emile Tremblay.
#3 Westfield State – 17-7-2 (9-3-2 MASCAC)
The Owls advanced into the conference semifinals after a 5-0 thrashing against sixth-seeded Worcester State on Thursday night on home ice.
Five different Owls scored in the contest, three of which came from first-year athletes: Liam Krupcyznski, Jackson Gruber, and Cannon Bonifay. The Owls fourth line provided the first two goals of the night as Nicolas Coppola got Westfield on the board ten minutes into the game.
Sophomore goaltender Aiden Winslow delivered an excellent effort between the pipes, registering 32 saves for his second shutout in the last three games he has started in goal. For the season, the Jacksonville native is third in the league with a 2.44 goals against average.
#2 Fitchburg State – 17-8 (10-4 MASCAC)
The Falcons will look to regain momentum from early in the season as the unit enters the conference tournament on a three-game losing streak.
Fitchburg is the defending MASCAC Champions after defeating MCLA in the title game, 3-1. The Falcons earned a first-round bye in the conference tournament after locking up a top two seed.
The Falcons have the top four point scorers in the MASCAC led by forward Aleksei Filimonov with 13 goals and 25 assists. Devin Niles is second in the conference at 37 points and is the Falcons leading goal scorer with 16.
The Owls will be up against one of the top goalies in the MASCAC in Soderberg who is second in the conference in goals against average (2.13 GAA) and save percentage (.934).
The winner of Saturday's semifinal game will advance into the MASCAC Championship game on Saturday, March 7 against either top-seeded Anna Maria or fifth-seeded MCLA.
