WESTFIELD, Mass. – Dante Moretti and Cameron Patton each scored a goal and added an assist, and Brandon Shantz made 23 saves in goal to post a 3-0 win over Westfield State in a MASCAC men's ice hockey game at Amelia Park Arena on Thursday evening.
Plymouth, which entered the game receiving votes in the US College Hockey Online Division 3 poll, improved to 16-5 overall and 13-1 in the league, while Westfield drops to 10-10 and 6-7 in the conference.
Moretti centered the puck for Patton to finish on the power play just 3:53 into the first period to give the Panthers all the offense they would need.
Neither team could muster a goal until early in the third period. The Panthers pounded Westfield State goalie Aiden Winslow with 34 shots through the first two periods, but he held the line in net to give the Owls a chance to equalize.
Moretti gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead on the power play 1:15 into the third period, knocking home a rebound in front of the net. Lucas Jones and Patton picked up assists on the play.
Will Redick tacked on an unassisted goal as he picked off a pass and skated the puck between the circle before flipping one past Winslow for the 3-0 final.
Shantz did the job in net for the Panthers, withstanding a pair of Owls power plays in the final 10 minutes to preserve the win and the shutout.
Plymouth out-shot the Owls 48-23 on the evening.
Westfield will be back in action on Saturday, hosting Framingham State at 5:35 p.m. at Amelia Park.
