Valtonen, O’Halloran Receive MASCAC Recognition
Westfield State goaltender Valtteri Valtonen and first-year forward Ryan O’Halloran both earned MASCAC honors this past week with Valtonen receiving the conference Goalie of the Week and O’Halloran named the Rookie of the Week.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State junior goaltender Valtteri Valtonen (Helsinki, Finland) and first-year forward Ryan O'Halloran (Burlington, Mass.) each earned conference recognition this past week with Valtonen receiving the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Goalie of the Week while O'Halloran was named the Rookie of the Week.
Valtonen was named the Goalie of the Week for the second time this season after finishing the week with a 1.52 goals against average and a .957 save percentage in a 1-1 week for the Owls. He recorded 29 saves in a 4-1 victory over Salem State on Thursday, then tallied 39 saves in a setback against Framingham State on Saturday.
On the season, Valtonen has started all six games between the pipes for the Owls, totaling a 3-3 record. He is currently second in the MASCAC in goals against (2.67) and save percentage (.935).
O'Halloran secured the league's Rookie of the Week honors after scoring the game-winning goal in the Owls win against Salem State on Thursday. The rookie forward has provided instant offense for Westfield this season as he currently leads the squad with four goals, which is tied for fourth in the MASCAC.
Westfield will travel to Stonehill College for their next game in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday with puck drop slated for 7:30 P.M.
