Jones Named MASCAC Rookie of the Week
Mathieu Jones (Gatineau, Quebec / Gatineau Flames, QJAAAHL) was named the league's rookie of the week.
Westfield, Mass.- Westfield State University's men's ice hockey team had several players receive Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference recognition for their excellent play this past week.
Mathieu Jones (Gatineau, Quebec / Gatineau Flames, QJAAAHL) was named the league's rookie of the week. The junior forward finished the week with three goals and two assists, propelling the Owls to a 2-1 week. Jones buried a pair of goals in their road win against Framingham State and added a late goal to secure the win against Worcester. After this explosive week, Jones moves up to third place on the roster in points (13), with five goals and eight assists.
Junior forward Joseph Carbone (Marshfield, Mass./ Williston Northampton School) made this week's honor roll and has been the clutch factor for the Owls as of late. Carbone netted the game winning goals in both of their victories this week for his fourth and fifth goals of the year.
Goaltender Valtteri Valtonen (Helsinki, Finland; HIFK U20 SM-LIIGA) also made the honor roll, securing two wins over the week. Valtonen recorded a 1.50 GAA and .961 save percentage, stopping 73 out of 76 shots that he saw throughout the week.
Currently holding a record of 9-8-2, and with playoffs right around the corner, the Owls will look to finish their season strong, starting with an away game today against Worcester State at 3:50 at Fidelity Bank Ice Center in Worcester, MA. They have another conference battle at Salem State's Rockett arena on Thursday February 10th at 7:00pm.
