Diamond, Valtonen Receive MASCAC Honors
Owls senior forward Jason Diamond and sophomore goalkeeper Valtteri Valtonen each earn MASCAC recognition.
Westfield, Mass. – Westfield State senior forward Jason Diamond (Lakeville, Conn.) and sophomore goalkeeper Valtteri Valtonen (Helsinki, Finland) each earned MASCAC recognition this past week. Diamond was selected the MASCAC Player of the Week, while Valtonen received the Goalie of the Week.
Diamond finished with two goals and an assist in a 2-0 week for the Owls. He scored the second goal of the game in the third period of a 2-0 victory over Salem State on Thursday. He then tallied a goal and an assist to help the Owls to a 6-4 win over Framingham State on Saturday. On the season, Diamond has collected four points (2 goals and 2 assists).
Valtonen earned his first win of the season in commanding fashion as the Owls netminder piled up 43 saves and earned the shutout in a 2-0 win over Salem State. With the game scoreless heading into the third period, Valtonen stopped 15 of his 43 total shots on net to preserve the shutout and secure the win. The performance dropped his overall goals against average to a team-leading 2.88 while also producing a .931 save percentage, which is second in the conference.
Westfield State will look to carry their momentum from last week into their next match-up as the Owls travel to Johnson and Wales University of Rhode Island tomorrow at 7:00 P.M.
