Rogers Gathers MASCAC Player of the Week After 52-Point Barrage
Rogers' historic effort secured him player of the week honors and has the Owls in prime position to clinch the top seed in the MASCAC Tournament which starts next week.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Days after setting the single-game program record with a 52-point outing over the weekend, Westfield State sophomore forward Kenney Rogers (Springfield, Mass.) was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week.
Across a pair of conference victories for the Owls, Rogers averaged 32.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, four assists, and two steals to help maintain the team's first-place position in the conference standings.
On Saturday, Rogers delivered a historic effort, breaking a 57-year-old school record previously held by Dr. Ray Glynn, by tallying 52 points on 20-37 shooting from the floor in a 106-88 win over Bridgewater State in front of the Woodward Center crowd. He also pulled down 12 rebounds and dished out five assists. The 52 points are tied for the most points scored in a Division III game this season, and ties a facility record with former Owls' women's basketball standout Jill Valley who reached the mark in 2017.
He also recorded a double-double with 12 points, ten rebounds, and four steals in the Owls road win at Anna Maria on Wednesday.
The scoring barrage vaults Rogers into second in the MASCAC at 20.0 points per game and across 12 conference games, he leads the conference in scoring at 23.1 points per game. The sophomore forward is second in the league with 105 assists and is fifth in rebounding at 8.2 per game. Rogers has registered 20 or more points 11 times this season, shooting 50 percent or better from the field in six of his last eight.
In just 51 career games, Rogers is 26 points shy of 1,000 career points after amounting 976 points in less than two full seasons.
Westfield State (18-5, 10-2 MASCAC) have positioned themselves in a favorable spot in an effort to clinch the number one overall seed in the MASCAC Tournament and the conference's regular season title. The Owls can claim the top seed with a win on Wednesday at home against Salem State or a Worcester State loss. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 P.M. at the Woodward Center in Westfield, Mass.
