WESTFIELD, Mass. - Three Westfield State University field hockey players were named to the Little East Conference's all-conference teams on Tuesday, as voted on by the league's coaches.
Senior back Rachel Bunce (Dennis-Yarmouth HS/East Dennis, Mass.), junior midfielder Carly Zona (Auburn, Mass.), and sophomore forward Cora Rogers (Milford, N.H.) were all named to the circuit's second team.
Bunce had a standout senior season, tallying 11 goals and four assists for 26 points. Bunce tallied three game-winning goals and converted on 3 of 4 penalty strokes during the season, and contributed three defensive saves as well. Bunce contributed on both ends of the field, serving as a defender on defensive penalty corners, and as the inserter on the Owls offensive penalty corners.
Zona finished the season with two goals and six assists for 10 points. She helped key Westfield's transition play from a central midfield position, both goals were game winners, and she served as the Owls' big hitter at the top of the circle on corner plays.
Rogers transferred to Westfield this fall and made an immediate impact with 17 goals and three assists for 37 points. She led the team in goals and points, and ranked third in the league in goals and fourth in points. Her 17 goals are the sixth-best single-season total in school history.
Westfield State finished the 2017 campaign with a 10-10 overall record and a 7-4 mark in the Little East under head coach Jessica Bergen. Finishing fourth in the regular season, the upstart Owls won a pair of league playoff games, including an upset of top-seeded Worcester State in the semifinals to advance to the Little East Championship game, before falling at Keene State.
