Eric Lovell Named to D3football.com National Team of the Week!
Lovell intercepted a pair of passes and forced a fumble in the Owls 22-7 win over Fitchburg State.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Owls' freshman standout Eric Lovell (Barnstable, Mass.) earned a national honor with a spot on D3football.com's coveted "Team of the Week" after a 22-7 Westfield State victory against Fitchburg State where Lovell snagged two interceptions.
A highlight moment in the game came from Lovell's pick that was brought back to Fitchburg's 7-yard line, setting up the Owls for a touchdown.
The defensive back showcased a dominant season in his first year with the Owls having earned MASCAC's Rookie of the Week honors twice this season. His first standout performance came against VT State-Castleton (Date) , where he recorded an interception and recovered two fumbles. His ability to create turnover opportunities has created many offensive opportunities for the Owls. Lovell racked up a total of 19 tackles and 10 assist tackles across 9 games and leads the Owl's stats with four interceptions.
Lovell and twin brother Andrew have been a key component of the Owls defensive backfield this season. The talented duo have been showcasing their talent throughout the season, as Andrew racked up 20 total tackles, 22 assisted tackles, and 2 interceptions in the 2024 season.
This marks the 26th season of D3.football.com presenting outstanding performances from DIII players on the national level.
The Owls have placed 10 different players on the team of the week in that span.
This is second year in a row the Owls have claimed a spot on D3football.com's national weekly honors during the final week of the football season. Owls' safety Christian Julian (Hingham, Mass.) and running back Jordan Smith (Coventry, Conn.) earned a spot on the national team of the week in the 2023 season. Julian racked up three interceptions in the game against Fitchburg in 2023, tying Westfield's record for most interceptions in a game. Owls running back Jordan Smith also was named to the D3 Team of the Week that week as he ran for 223 yards and five TD's in an Owls win over the Falcons.
