Allen, Currier Secure MASCAC Weekly Honors
Victory this past Saturday has come and gone for the Westfield State football team as they took a victory 24-17 over Bridgewater State. In the victory, two performances granted Player of the Week honors to both junior cornerback Zach Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) and kicker Andrew Currier (Attleboro, Mass.).
WESTFIELD, Mass. –Victory this past Saturday has come and gone for the Westfield State football team as they took a victory 24-17 over Bridgewater State. In the victory, two performances granted Player of the Week honors to both junior cornerback Zach Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) and kicker Andrew Currier (Attleboro, Mass.).
One of the Owls defensive stars on Saturday was Allen who was named the MASCAC Defensive Player of the Week. Allen had a crucial play late in the fourth quarter with the Owls down 17-16, intercepting a pass from Bridgewater State quarterback SP Sparano that then set up Westfield's game winning drive. Allen also tallied three tackles and a pass break up in the Westfield win.
The other Owls honoree is MASCAC Rookie of the Week winner, Andrew Currier (Attleboro, Mass.). Currier was successful in the special teams game on Saturday as he had an extra point along with a 25-yard field goal that got the scoring going for Westfield. He had success punting the football as he only had to punt twice but combined for 93 yards for the two. Currier had a punt and a kickoff that was mishandled by the Bears with one leading to an Owls recovery.
Efforts from Allen and Currier helped boost the Owls to a victory over MASCAC opponent Bridgewater State. Westfield's first win over the Bears in 12 years and look to stay hot under new head coach Lou Conte Jr. as he secured his first win as head coach of Westfield.
Westfield hosts a third straight home game against Western Connecticut on Saturday, September 21 at 2 p.m. at Alumni Field.
