Football Senior Day Kicks off at Noon on Saturday in Season Finale
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University football will play host to the Fitchburg State University Falcons on Saturday, November 12 at noon from Alumni Field in Westfield, Massachusetts on Senior Day in the final conference game of the 2022 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season. Westfield State will honor its 14 seniors prior to the start of the game. Senior day festivities will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m.

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University football will play host to the Fitchburg State University Falcons on Saturday, November 12 at noon from Alumni Field in Westfield, Massachusetts on Senior Day in the final conference game of the 2022 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season. OWLS SENIORS: For the Owls' annual senior day celebration, Westfield State University Athletics will recognize our graduating seniors for their commitment and hard work throughout their careers at Westfield State. Dominic Carme, Frederick Centrella, Shane Clark, Zachary Clark, Thomas Connolly, Kyle Dodge, Tod Holloway, Jr., Cullen MacNeil, Kordell Parrish, John Rose, Peter Spinale, Zachary Thetreault, Gabriel Velez, and Julian Bass will all receive recognition. Senior Day events will begin at approximately 11:30 a.m.
LAST WEEK: The Owls will look to finish the season on a two-game winning streak, after getting past Worcester State 28-18 last Saturday. Junior quarterback Colby Pires had an extremely effective afternoon, completing 16-17 (94%) passes to set the school record for single-game passing efficiency. Junior running back Jordan Smith received MASCAC recognition this week as Offensive and Co-Rookie of the week for his stellar two-way performance which included 25 rushes for 130 yards and a touchdown, as well as throwing for another on a half-back option play. Smith also made an impact on the defensive end, generating five tackles and one pass break-up. Senior and sophomore linebackers Cullen MacNeil and Tyler Cooley led the way for the Owls (1-8, 1-6 MASCAC) on the defensive end combining for 23 total tackles.
The Falcons will look to finish their season on a positive note after a 41-21 defeat to Western Connecticut State University. Junior quarterback Logan Wilson led the way on offense completing nine of his 14 attempted passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. He was assisted by junior running back Elijah Zaire McKnight, who rushed for 90 yards on 13 carries, and Keyshawn McCurdy who caught five receptions for 107 yards and three touchdowns.
OWLS on OFFENSE: Pires has facilitated most of the load on offense for the Owls. In seven games played, Pires has completed 98 of 163 passes for a 60.1% completion rate on 984 yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions. Pires is the fifth-leading MASCAC quarterback in yards per game, averaging 140.6 per game. On the ground, Smith leads the way with 523 rushing yards on 143 carries for five touchdowns on the year. Senior running back Shane Clark has also been active in the backfield for the Owls, picking up two touchdowns in his nine games played. In the air for the Owls, the junior receiving corps of Owen Thompson, Dylan Disabella, and Michael Foley have taken care of business this season. In nine games played, Foley leads the group with 25 receptions for 485 yards and four touchdowns. Foley is the fourth-leading MASCAC receiver in receiving yards per game at 53.9 yards per game. Disabella has corralled 26 catches for 283 yards and two touchdowns, and Thompson has caught 16 receptions for 175 yards.
OWLS on DEFENSE: Sophomore linebacker Tyler Cooley leads all Westfield State defenders in total tackles and tackles per game at 107 total tackles and 11.9 tackles per game. Cooley is currently leading all MASCAC defenders in tackles per game. Senior defensive linemen Peter Spinale is fourth in the MASCAC in total sacks at six on the season. Senior linebacker Cameron Danahy has played a crucial role in the Owls' defense this season, totaling 59 tackles, two sacks, and one interception. Zachary Allen and Christian Julian are the leading defensive backs for the Owls this season, each picking up an interception this season. Both players each broke up over ten passes this season, Julian with 11 and Allen with 12.
OWLS on SPECIAL TEAMS: First-year kicker Evan Milstead has completed 79% of extra point attempts on 15 of 19 attempts. His longest make sits at 39 yards this season. Clark and Thompson each split punting duties, sharing reps in their nine games this season. Clark has punted 30 times this season, totaling 1010 yards with a 33.7-yard average. Thompson has punted 22 times this season, totaling 750 yards with a 34.1-yard average.
FALCONS on OFFENSE: Fitchburg State's offense is led by junior quarterback Logan Wilson. In nine games played this season, Wilson has thrown for 733 yards on 74 completions over 132 attempts. Wilson is assisted by the first-year wide receivers Sahir Gomez, Kwasi Boakye, and Keyshawn McCurdy. McCurdy shared the MASCAC Co-Rookie of the Week recognition with Westfield State running back Jordan Smith for his 107-yard, three-touchdown performance in the setback against Western Connecticut. In seven games this season, McCurdy completed 12 receptions for 150 yards and three touchdowns. In nine games this season, Gomez leads the group in yards, collecting 289 on 23 receptions with a touchdown. Boakye completed 12 receptions for 103 yards this season. For the Falcons' ground game, Elijah Zaire McKnight is the man in charge, rushing 80 carries for 354 yards and three touchdowns on the year.
FALCONS on DEFENSE: First-year linebacker Camren Topkin leads the way for the Falcons on defense, generating a team-high 65 total tackles this season on an average of 7.2 tackles a game. Topkin is the fifth-leading MASCAC defender, averaging 7.2 tackles per game. Senior outside linebacker Luke Noyes possesses more sacks than any other Falcon, tallying three on the season.
FALCONS on SPECIAL TEAMS: Fitchburg State divides the kicking duties between senior Linnea D'Acchille and first-year Carson Russell. D'Acchille handles extra point duties while Russell handles punts and field goal attempts. D'Acchille has completed 82% of his extra point attempts this season, going 9-11. Russell is currently 1-3 on field goal attempts, with his longest coming from 38 yards out. Punting for the Falcons, Russell shares responsibilities with sophomore Thomas Farr. Russell has punted eight times this season for a total of 819 yards, averaging 34.1 yards per punt. Farr has punted on 21 occasions this season, totaling 725 yards for an average of 34.5 yards per punt.
