BROCKTON – Westfield State University's Ryan Donahue (Medfield, Mass.) fanned a franchise record-tying 13 Brockton Rox batters as the Westfield Starfires cruised to an 8-0 Futures Collegiate Baseball League win at Campanelli Stadium on Friday, July 9, 2022.
"I thought we played great. We took the lead early, and I was lucky enough to hold it for them," Donahue told MassLive.com after the game. On his record-tying night, he praised his Westfield State batterymate Florence, saying, "I have to give a lot of props to Nolan Florence. He was creative with his pitch calls, and he gave me the confidence to throw every pitch."
According to MassLive, Donahue's 13 strikeouts tied the mark set by Westfield native and American International College pitcher Mason St. Pierre in the franchise's inaugural season; St. Pierre struck out 13 Rox on July 12, 2019. The 17 combined for Donahue.
Donahue and Florence have been playing with the Westfield Starfires throughout the summer. Donahue led the Owls with 58 innings pitched this spring, striking out 62 hitters while posting a 5-1 record and a 3.57 earned run average.
During the summer season, Donahue is 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA and ranks eighth in the Futures League in strikeouts with 38 in 33 innings of work.
