Owls Host MCLA on Patriot's Day
The Westfield State baseball team faces off against the Trailblazers in a MASCAC game from Hagan Field in Westfield, Mass.
Westfield, Mass.- The Westfield State University baseball team will be hosting MCLA Monday afternoon at 330 p.m. in a single game conference battle.
The Owls (13-9 overall ,5-2 conference) will face off against the Trailblazers (9-14 overall, 0-6 conference) for the first time this season, with the two teams scheduled to meet up for a double header at MCLA on April 26.
Westfield as a team has had a strong hitting season, with an overall team batting average of .293 and 24 home runs. The Owls' have been piloted by seniors Nick Martin and Ethan Day, while finding production from freshman Samuel Palmer. Martin leads the Owls in hitting with a .350 batting average, recording 28 hits, 19 RBI, and six home runs so far this year. He also leads the Owls with 34 runs this season. Day trails behind Martin with 27 hits and a .342 batting average. Day has two home runs, six doubles, and 17 RBI this year.
Palmer, only a freshman, has a .512 batting average and .860 slugging percentage with three home runs, four doubles, and 14 RBI. Palmer was recently recognized as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division III national rookie of the week.
MCLA has leaned on seniors Austin Rachiele and Randy Adams to guide the Trailblazers this year. Rachiele leads the Trailblazers with 28 hits, five doubles, five triples, and eight RBI. He has a batting average of .350, which is the highest on the team. Adams has a batting average of .297 with six doubles, three home runs, and 25 RBI. Adams has the most RBI and home runs for the Trailblazers.
