Owls Host 4th Ranked Eastern Connecticut in Home Opener
Westfield State squares off with Eastern Connecticut State in the home opener on Wednesday at 3:30 P.M. from Bud and Jim Hagan Field in Westfield, Mass.
WESTFIELD, Mass.- Westfield State University baseball is set to host the #4-ranked Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday, March 23, for a 3:30 start at Bud and Jim Hagan Field in Westfield, Massachusetts.
The Owls enter this contest with a 5-3 overall record. After an impressive 5-1 start to the year, Westfield dropped their last two in a doubleheader against Gettysburg this past Saturday. In eight games played, the Owls have scored 64 runs with a collective batting average of .305 and launched 11 homers.
Eastern Connecticut sits at the top of the Little East standings at 8-1 thus far, and were ranked fourth in the nation in the most recent D3Baseball poll. Senior catcher Matt Malcom (East Lyme, Conn.) has been the Warriors top threat at the plate. Malcom has belted three home runs in 19 at-bats. He also leads the team in walks (8), is first among starters with a .556 OBP and second in RBI (8).
Shane Bogli (Vernon, Conn.) will start on the bump for the Owls. Their senior ace has appeared in three games, starting two of them, and looks to add to his 2-0 win-loss record. Bogli has chucked 15 innings, struck out 14 and walked none to maintain a 1.80 ERA, a fantastic start to his senior campaign.
First-year Nick Marshall (Reading, Mass.) has been red hot to start his rookie year. Marshall has batted in nine runs on 12 hits including two HR and five doubles, accounting for another nine runs that he has scored himself.
Senior outfielders Ethan Day (Meriden, Conn.) and Nick Martin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) have been a pitcher's nightmare at the plate, both with batting averages close to .400 (.393, .385), and they both have a pair of dingers to their name. Day is currently second in hits (11) and third in RBI (8) among starters.
Defensively, the Owls have been sound with just 11 errors on 268 chances, for a fielding percentage of .959.
Westfield will travel to Springfield Massachusetts on Friday March 25 to battle the Golden Bears of Western New England University at 3:30, and then back home on Saturday for two more against WNEU starting at noon.
