PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Former Westfield State University baseball coach Dave Jauss began the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, serving as a bench coach for manager Clint Hurdle as the Pirates defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2016 opener of the Major League Baseball season.
Jauss was the Westfield State baseball head coach for three years (1982-84). He led the Owls to the NCAA Tournament in 1984 and ECAC Tournament berths in 1982 and 1983 before taking the head coaching job at Atlantic Christian College in North Carolina and eventually moving into professional baseball in the Expos' minor league system.
Jauss joined the Pirates in 2012 as a special assistant to the GM. He has served as a bench coach for four other organizations - the New York Mets in 2010, the Baltimore Orioles in 2008-09, the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006-07 and the Boston Red Sox in 2001.
Jauss graduated from Amherst College with a B.A. degree in psychology and has a master's degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts.
