MARIETTA, Ohio - Westfield State College's Marlee Berg and Caitlin Handcock tied for 12th place in the high jump at the NCAA Division III women's outdoor track and field championships on Saturday, May 23.

The Owl seniors' best jump was 5-2 1/2. Berg, who was nursing a foot injury, was seeded fourth entering the finals with a school-record jump of 5-7. She placed 11th in the 2008 outdoor championships and won the 2009 indoor national championship by clearing 5-6 1/2.

"Marlee's foot was really hurting and she did the best she could," said Westfield head coach Sean O'Brien, who noted that Berg twice just missed clearing 5-4 1/2, which would have earned her All-America honors. "In an event like the high jump, you have little room for error."

Handcock qualified for nationals with a 5-5 3/4 effort at last week's ECAC championships.

There were 24 competitors in the national high jump finals, with senior Ashley Hushton of Hardin-Simmons placing first with a winning height of 5-7.
