Senior Marlee Berg has been selected Westfield State's NCAA Woman of the Year for the 2008-2009 academic year.
The recipient of the college's NCAA woman of the year award is one of the most versatile and talented athletes in Westfield State history. Berg has competed in many track and field events for the Owls over the past four years, specializing in the sprints, hurdles and jumping events.
This past February she achieved national acclaim for Westfield State College by winning the 2009 NCAA Division III indoor high jump championships.
Berg's other athletic achievement also are impressive. She was:
- a four-time qualifier for NCAA Division III national championships ;
- a Mass. State Conference champion 14 teams;
- All New England nine times, including the winning the 2008 heptathlon championship;
- All-ECAC three times;
- the Westfield State College team’s Most Valuable Field Performer 2007, 2008 and 2009;.
She also holds school records in four events - 200 meter dash, high jump, 500 meter run, and pentathlon - and is a member of four school record setting relay teams.
Berg was a team captain for the Owl track and field and cross country teams and also displayed her leadership abilities off the playing fields. She was a highly active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council IMASCAC) for Westfield State and the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC). Berg served as the MASCAC SAAC president this past academic year.
