SPRINGFIELD - The Westfield State men's outdoor track and field team placed ninth in the New England Division III championships held May 1-2 at Springfield College.
Westfield State totaled 35 points in the top-flight competition, with 11 Owls earning All New England honors by placing in the top eight.
Senior Nate Landry and junior Tyler Merchant were Westfield's top individual finishers. Landry finished fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 165-2. Teammate Anthony Stomski was right behind Landry, placing fifth in the hammer throw (164-7). Landry also placed 11th in shot put (43-4 1/2).
Merchant finished fourth in the javelin (178-4) and teammate Chris Kerr placed sixth by whipping the spear 176-0.
Junior sprinter Marc Gomes and sophomore hurdler Michael Chapin placed in three events. Gomes was seventh in the 200 meter dash (22.62) and eighth in the 100 (11.31). He also was a member of the 4 x 100 relay team that placed third in 43.01. The Westfield relay squad had been seeded second entering the meet with a time of 42.19.
Other members of the 4 x 100 relay were Jim Flynn, Chapin and Todd Kittelson.
Chapin was seventh in the 110 high hurdlers (15.74) and eighth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (55.75), while Kittelson placed sixth in the 200 (22.61).
Brandon Palmer placed seventh in the triple jump (44-9 3/4) and just missed All New England honors with a fine long jump of 21-11. Earning All New England honors with an eighth place was Jovaney Toledlo in the shot put (44-4 3/4).
