NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Kacey Abbriano scored a game-high six goals, and Ally Daniels and Kathleen Hennessy each added three goals apiece to lead the Norwich University women’s lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over Westfield State Thursday afternoon at Howard Field.
Mollie Fitzpatrick and Chelsea Martin both chipped in one goal apiece for the Cadets, who improve to 7-3 on the season.
Rachel Dionne led the Owls (9-4) with five goals, while Laura Chiricosta contributed three goals.
Hennessy scored twice in the first seven minutes to help NU to a quick 3-0 lead. Then, after a Westfield State goal, Norwich reeled off five straight markers to assume a commanding 8-1 cushion at the 6:21 mark.
The Owls got to within 9-3 with just under one minute to play in the opening stanza, but Daniels’ goal just before the first half buzzer gave the Cadets a 10-3 lead at the intermission.
Westfield State netted three of the first four goals of the second half to cut its deficit to 11-6 at the 24:58 mark, but a pair of Norwich goals in a span of 17 seconds pushed the lead back up to 13-6 with 20:13 to play.
The Owls hung tough, outscoring the Cadets 4-1 down the stretch. Norwich held Westfield State off the scoreboard over the final 4:30 to preserve the victory.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday, April 18, when the Cadets host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Emerson College in a huge conference match at Howard Field beginning at 2 p.m. The winner of the contest will clinch the conference regular season title and the right to host the GNAC Tournament, which begins April 22.
Westfield plays a league game at Elms College on Saturday.
