WELLESLEY - The Wellesley College Swimming and Diving team picked up a season-opening win as the host of the 13th-annual Betty Spears Relays held at Wellesley's Chandler Pool.
Wellesley was led by several newcomers, winning eight events to post a team score of 180. Mount Holyoke took second place with 156 points, tallying four wins. Westfield State placed third with 144 points, totaling three wins in the event.
Blue first-years Virginia Hung (Plainsboro, NJ) and Carolyn Jackson (Leesburg, VA) were each a part of four winning relay teams. The rookies swam to top spots in the 200-yard Fly/Breast relay, the 300-yard Fly relay and the 200- and 400- Medley relays. Also for Wellesley, first-year Maia Fitzstevens (Rochester, NY) notched three relay wins while classmate Katherine Foley (Orono, ME) picked up two.
Mount Holyoke was led by sophomore Lydia Bowers (Scotland, CT) and first-year Nora Cunningham (Bronx, NY), each tallying three relay wins. The pair notched victories as part of the 200-yard back/free relay, and the 200- and 400- freestyle relays. Also for the Lyons, first-years Stephanie Roses (Chapel Hill, NC) and Joan Burton (Gross Point Farms, MI) picked up a pair of victories.
Westfield State swept both diving events on the afternoon. Sophomore Kim Schmidt (Longmeadow, MA) was a double winner, totaling 250.42 points to win the 3-meter event while picking up 227.55 points on the 1-meter board. Senior Ariana Mastro (Needham, MA) took second in both events, with 222.52 on the 3-meter and 223.80 on the 1-meter. Sophomore Hannah Rees (Framingham, MA) rounded out the successful diving performance by Westfield, posting third place finishes on each board.
Wellesley returns to the pool with a 1:00pm meet on November 14th as the Blue travel to Clark University. Mount Holyoke next participates in the Regis College Invitational on Friday at 7:00pm. Westfield State is back in action on Saturday at UMass-Dartmouth, swimming at 12:00pm.
