SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Freshman Lucas Romero (Roho Sta Marg, Calif.) scored with 11.6 seconds remaining to give Westfield State a dramatic 5-4 victory over Western New England in the second annual Falcons Cup game on Friday, Nov. 6.
It was the season opener for the Owls, who defended their Falcons Cup crown. WNEC drops to 0-2
Trailing 4-2, WNEC scored power play goals in a 48-second span of the third period to knot the score at 4-all with 7:35 remaining.
The Owls finally got back into a full strength situation in the closing minutes and Romero, in front of the goal, redirected a straight on shot attempt from Dennis Zak for the game-winner.
Westfield took an early 2-0 lead on goals by senior captain Mike Muolo and sophomore Pat Nelson. WNEC tied the score at 2-all after one period on goals from Roy Hansen and Tyler Kwalek.
Muolo and Nelson scored again to stake the Owls to a 4-2 lead. Nelson scored a power play goal early in the second period and Muolo scored 29 seconds into the third period.
WNEC then struck for its power play goals, the first scored by Kory Grahl on a 5-on-3 situation. Mike Kaselouskas tied the scored less than minute later.
Dylan Scanlon, a junior from Longmeadow, registered three assists for the Owls.
