NORTHAMPTON - Senior point guard Sarah Boudreau (Tewksbury) scored a career-high 20 points to lead hot-shooting Westfield State to a 70-56 women's basketball victory over Smith College on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
The Owls shot a sizzling 62 percent from the field for the game, led by their starting five who were an aggregate 22 for 31. Westfield shot 70 percent from the floor ((14 for 20) in the first half but only led 33-32 at the intermission.
The teams exchanged baskets in the second half and were tied at 47 with 11:37 remaining. Westfield then went on a 11-2 run over the next six minutes to put the game out of reach.
Boudreau was 6 for 9 from the field, including 2 for 2 from 3-point range, and canned 6 of 9 free throws. Junior center Cassy Jouannet (Conway) scored 15 points and posted game highs of 10 rebounds and 3 assists; she was 7 for 11 from the field. Juniors Krista Corriveau and Christal Bello tallied 10 points apiece.
Westfield was 5 for 6 from 3-point range and outrebounded Smith, 32-22.
The Pioneers were led by first year Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, NY), who had a team high 12 points, and junior guard Anna Veltri (W. Milford, NJ) with 10 points. First year Daron Dean (Brush Prairie, WA) pulled down a team high 8 rebounds.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, November 24 when they host Elms College at 6 p.m. The Owls travel to northwestern Pennsylvania this weekend where they will compete in the Allegheny College Classic in Meadville, Pa. Westfield plays Pitt-Greensburg Saturday at 3:00 and Allegheny Sunday at 2:00.
