WESTFIELD, Mass. – Freshman guard Angela Paterson (Nantucket) led Westfield State’s balanced attack with 13 points and the Owls raced to a 20-point lead and held on for a 72-64 victory over UMass Dartmouth in a fast-paced women’s basketball season opener Sunday, Nov. 15.

Paterson and senior forward Molly Brogan (Mendon, 11 points) scored all of their points in the first half to lead Westfield to a 42-31 lead at the intermission.

The Owls ripped off the first nine points of the second half, including five points from senior guard Krista Corriveau (Plainville, CT) to take a 51-31 lead.

The Corsairs then went on a 13-2 run to pull within nine, 53-44, with 13:59 remaining. But freshman guard Jenny Bell (Northampton) gave Westfield big boost with a 3-point basket to put the lead back to double digits.

The Owls led by 15 points, 68-53, with 5:56 remaining when the Corsairs went on another run. UMass Dartmouth scored nine unanswered points to cut the gap to six, 68-62, with 4:04 remaining.

Westfield junior center Cassy Jouannet (Conway) scored a big basket for the game’s final points. The Owls held a 70-64 lead when Jounnet missed a short jumper. UMass Dartmouth’s Colleen Moriarty grabbed the rebound with 1:15 on the clock, but Jouannet swiped the ball from her on the baseline and converted a layup.

Jouannet scored 12 points in Westfield’s balanced attack. Brogan, who was saddled with foul trouble for most of the second half, hauled down a team-high six rebounds. The Owls shot 53 percent from the field and out-rebounded the Corsairs, 34-26.

Junior guard Lynley DeAmato (Melrose) poured in a game-high 22 points for UMass Dartmouth. Beatrice Atkinson (Brockton) scored 16 in her collegiate debut and junior forward Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis) added 10 points.
