CUMBERLAND, Maine - Westfield senior standout Kerry Arouca finished fifth at the New England Division III regional cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 14.
Arouca qualified for the NCAA national championships for the second straight year; she placed seventh in the New England Regional championships last season. The NCAA Division III national finals will be held at Highland Heights Golf Course in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 11:00 a.m.
Arouca was clocked in 21:58.83 on the 6,000 meters course in leading the Owls to a 17th place in the 47-team field. MIT, which placed two runners in the top three, tied with Middlebury for the team championship.
MIT's Jacque Wentz was the top individual finisher with a time of 21:35.7, followed by Wesleyan's Ravenna Neville (21:39.8), MIT's Maria Monks (21:44.9), and Middlebury's Addie Tousley (21:54.6).
"Kerry ran a good race," said Westfield coach Bill Devine. "She started out fast, running a 5:38 first mile, and ran hard. She may have been a little tired at the end but she finished hard.
"Kerry finished about 50 to 75 meters behind the top three runners," he continued. "And a runner passed her on the final downhill to nip her at the finish. I am confident she can do well at the national meet. She has to get out fast."
Also scoring for the Owls in the 315-runner field were: Ally Brown (83rd), Marissa Bonito (134th), Carolyn Connolly (151st) and Rachel Dionne (158th).
