KEENE, N.H. - Senior Kerry Arouca defended her individual title to lead Westfield State to a third-place team finish in the New England Alliance women's cross country championships Oct. 31 at Keene State.
Arouca ran the 5,000 meter course in 18:41 to defeat Keene State's Allison Chamberlain by six seconds.
"I got held back in the beginning , but was able to pull away at the mile and a half mark," said Arouca. "There was a lot of good competition, so winning the race was very euphoric."
Julie Messinger and Ally Brown placed second and third, respectively for Westfield in 20:13 and 20:15. Carolyn Connolly was 28th, followed by Rachael Cardin (31st), Rachel Dionne (35th), and Lynsay Wray (36th).
Keene State placed five runners in the top 10 to win the 13-team meet with 25 points. Southern Maine placed second with 59 points and Westfield compiled 81 points. Bridgewater placed fourth with 98 points.
