WESTFIELD, Mass. – Trailing 3-1 at halftime, Westfield State scored three second-half goals to rally for a 4-3 victory over WPI in non-conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
Westfield improved to 8-7-1 overall after its exciting comeback victory; the Owls are in second place in the Mass. State Conference with a 5-1 record and host MCLA in the regular season finale on Saturday.
WPI (9-5-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Mike Ford (Whitman) and Sean Galligan (Weymouth).
Westfield scored with 52 seconds remaining in the first half on a goal from Jon Caldwell (South Windsor, Conn.), but WPI responded with a quick goal with nine seconds remaining in the first half by senior Tyler Carroll (Andover), who scored his first career goal.
After an intense halftime speech from head coach Matt Noyes, the Owls dominated second-half play, out-shooting the Engineers, 12-3.
Sophomore Tim Parsons (Buzzards Bay) scored in the 65th minute and sophomore Josh Severns (Suffield, Conn.) tied the scored in the 69th minute. Parsons and Severns lead the Owls in scoring with 11 goals apiece.
Parsons set up the game-winning goal in the 85th minute as he made a nice cross pass from the right side past a defender in the box. Sophomore Justin Laliberte (Easthampton) then delivered the game-winning goal inside the right post.
Reserve goalie Jeff Pepoli was credited with the victory as Lucas Dexter exited the game in the 62nd minute with an injury.
Also playing well for Westfield was senior Ben Berthiaume (Swansea), who assisted on the second and third goals.
