SALEM - Sophomore Josh Severns (Suffield, CT) broke a scoreless tie with 8:35 remaining to propel the Westfield State Owls past the Salem State Vikings 1-0 in a MASCAC conference game at Alumni Field.
Severns scored his ninth goal of the year on an assist from Justin Laliberte (Easthampton, Mass.) to give Westfield its seventh victory of the season against seven losses and one tie while improving its conference record to 5-1.
Both teams faced very few scoring opportunities in the first period as the teams combined for only eight shots.
The Owls had the best scoring chance of the day when Kevin Andrale (Acushnet, Mass.) was awarded a penalty kick at the 42:15 mark of the second half. However, Luis Marques (Fall River, Mass.) made a diving stop to preserve the tie for Salem State (6-7, 3-3).
Salem State outshot Westfield State 10-7 for the game.
Luca Dexter (Acushnet, Mass.) made one save to pick up the win. Marques took the loss for the Vikings, which have dropped four of their past five games.
Salem State will next play on Tuesday, October 27th when they host Southern Maine. Westfield State will play WPI on Thursday, October 28th at 7:00 PM.
