WESTFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Shane Ortega (Pittsfield) fired a 76 to lead MCLA to a five-stroke victory (335-340) over Westfield State in a golf match between the Western Mass. rivals on Sunday, Oct. 11, at Tekoa Country Club.
Ortega shot 36 on the back nine despite a double bogey on the par 3 18th hole. The runner-up low medalist was Westfield No. 3 golfer Ryan Donovan, with a 37-42-79.
MCLA also received solid performances from junior Adam Ciborowski of West Springfield/St. Marys High School (44-40-84) and fresman Sean Cota of Adams/McCann Tech (44-43-87).
Sophomore Dan Korpita (Southampton) and junior Brett Williamson (Ludlow) shot 83 (42-41) and 87 (45-42), respectively, for the Owls. Two of Westfield’s top golfers – Derek Robichaud and Brian Nixon, both freshman from Foxboro – did not play.
