WESFIELD, Mass. – Senior Kerry placed first individually to lead Westfield State to a second-place team finish at the 14th Annual James Earley women’s cross country invitational at Stanley Park on Saturday, Oct. 10.
Arouca, an NCAA cross country national qualifier and All America steeplechaser last year, toured the 5,000 meter course in 18:57.49 to easily outdistance Southern Maine’s Carly Dion, who placed second in 19:23.92.
There were 266 runners and 25 teams participating in the popular invitational. Southern Maine placed first with 58 points, followed by Westfield (88), and Trinity (116).
Westfield’s other top runners were senior Ally Brown, with a fine fifth-place finish, sophomore Marissa Bonito (14th) and junior first-year runner Julie Messinger (16th).
“We ran well today despite the muddy conditions,” said Westfield coach Bill Devine.
Westfield is idle until Oct. 24 when it hosts the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) cross country championships at Stanley Park.
Westfield's Julie Messinger and Marissa Bonito come out of the woods and head for the home stretch.
