Enshrinement Set For Oct. 23

Six former Westfield State standouts, including track and cross country star Tom Maher, will be inducted into the college’s Athletics Hall of Fame during the 2009 Alumni Weekend.

The 14th annual inductions will be held Friday evening, Oct. 23, in Scanlon Banquet Hall on the Westfield campus. Once inducted there will be 99 distinguished Owls in the hall.

Greg Gauvin (‘96) is the all-time leading scorer in Westfield State basketball history; Andrea Bertini (’96) earned national acclaim for her 3-point shooting and led the women’s basketball team to four straight postseason appearances; Maher (’92) and Linda (Phillips) O’Brien (’92) were both standouts in cross country and track and field; Carlos Canino (’88) was a football all-conference defensive back and punt returner; and Bob Pepka was an All-New England volleyball player.

Track and field standout Jovaney Toledo was one of five Westfield State College students among the honorees at the Massachusetts Hall of Black Achievement (HOBA) annual awards ceremony recently held at Bridgewater State College.

NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Conference

Since 1998 Westfield State student-athletes have attended the NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference. This year two Owls, Mike Chapin and Ian Wilson, have been chosen for the conference, which will take place May 24-27 in Orlando, Fla., at the Walt Disney World Coronado Spring Resort.

The primary purpose of the conference is leadership development.

“The goal is to understand their own leadership traits, figure out their strong traits, and try to work on their weaker ones,” said Nancy Bals, Westfield State associate athletics director.

Westfield State's Senior Scholar-Athletes Of Year

Andrea Wasuk (basketball) and Phil Gingras (cross country/track) were
named the Westfield State 2009 female and male scholar-athletes of the 
year for having the highest cumulative grade point averages of the Westfield
senior student-athletes. Making the presentation at the college's varsity

Meet Results

AMHERST - Eleven Westfield State athletes competed in the All New England (Divisions I, II, II) outdoor track and field championships on Friday and Saturday, May 8-9.

Juniors Marc Gomes and Brandon Palmer were Westfield's top finishers as both just missed earning All New England honors by placing ninth. Gomes sprinted to a personal best in the 400 meter dash in 48.65; nearly qualifying for the NCAA Division III national championships. Palmer triple jumped 44-8 1/4; the eighth place finisher triple jumped 44-9.

Westfield State's seniors Todd Kittelson (Shrewsbury) and Nathan Landry (Chelmsford) were selected the MASCAC track and field athletes of the week.

Kittelson earned All New England Division III honors by finishing sixth in the 200 meter dash (22.51). He also was a member of the 4 x 100 relay team that placed third for the Owls at the New England Division III championships.

Landry earned All New England accolades with a fourth place performance in the hammer throw (165-2). He also placed 11th in the shot put.

Meet Results

SPRINGFIELD - The Westfield State men's outdoor track and field team placed ninth in the New England Division III championships held May 1-2 at Springfield College.

Westfield State totaled 35 points in the top-flight competition, with 11 Owls earning All New England honors by placing in the top eight.

Senior Nate Landry and junior Tyler Merchant were Westfield's top individual finishers. Landry finished fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 165-2. Teammate Anthony Stomski was right behind Landry, placing fifth in the hammer throw (164-7). Landry also placed 11th in shot put (43-4 1/2).

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State College celebrated the naming of the “Jerry Gravel Track” on Saturday, April 25, as the track dedication in the name of the college’s longtime head coach preceded the current team’s victories in the MASCAC Championship meet.

MASCAC Meet Results

WESTFIELD - The Westfield State men's outdoor track and field team turned in a another dominating performance in capturing the Massachusetts State College Athletics Conference (MASCAC) championship on Saturday, April 25, at the newly dedicated Jerry Gravel Track.

It was the 13th straight MASCAC crown for the Owls and the 26th in the past 27 years.
